Working man: Ah! I still didn’t put it down yet! Not yet!

Old man: No! You put it down!

image

Working man: Damn it… I was just thinking should I play there or not play there, you know…

FX: Rattle (“Jara” is the Japanese here, which comes from “jara-jara,” the sound of small objects jiggling together, here the stones as they rattle off the board into the old man’s hands)

image

Working man’s brother: But anyway you should know how fast he is at that, you know, older brother.

Working man: Faster than lightning.

image

Old man: Ha, ha, ha, ha! The win is decided in an instant, always.

Old man: That timing is it, the timing.

image

Working man’s brother: Stopping play like that, just when the fighting got going…

Working man: To think that with that old palsied hand of his… Unbelievable… Absolutely!

FX: Grumble, grumble [the FX here in Japanese is hard to render in English, but is something like “bu, bu,” which comes from “buta” = “pig,” and is the snorting sound that the animal makes, here indicating that man is grumbling to himself]

image

Working man: Oh! When it comes to this, a man has to take a stand!

Working man: I’ve decided…

image

Working man’s brother: Older brother, where are you going?

Working man: Tomekichi, for a little while we cannot meet, but… be well and carry on as you may!

image

Working man: Hey, a whirlwind must have brought this here.

image

Working man: Excuse me… May I come in?

Working man: Is there anyone here to answer?

image

Strange man: What is this? Is it Kuma san?

Strange man: If it’s for the pick up, it’s not ready, I say.

image

Working man: No, that’s not it, I tell you.

Working man: Actually, I wonder how much faith you have in the strength of this hand.

With that, the prince of the guttersnipes becomes an apprentice.

Two turbulent weeks later…

image

Working man’s brother: Ah! Older brother?! It’s been a while―!

Working man’s brother: Where have you been―!

image

Working man: It was a palsied chicken…

FX: Glaring eyes

image

Old man: Ho, ho―! You’ve been studying somewhere and you’re ready for a test, I see!

Old man: How good, how good? How good has your hand advanced to play?

image

Old man: Ha, ha, ha! It doesn’t look like your hand has gained a bit ahead―!

Working man: …

FX: Grab, grab

image

Old man: Ah!

FX: Whoosh!

image

Old man: Is that atari? … B-but I still didn’t put it down, I say―!

image

Old man: You know, you know, hey, just a second…

Working man’s brother: Older brother, you chose the wrong line to study, I tell you.
