Kidō Cover, May 1986

Cover: Kidō, May 1986

The covers of Kidō magazine were always beautiful and unique and conveyed the essence of Japanese tradition. Within the magazine an explanatory note about the scene was always given. The May 1986 cover featured a cultural event unique to Japan.

Text by the artist:

In Kanagawa Prefecture [just south of Tōkyō], a cultural-puppet jōruri [ballad/drama], the “Hayashi-Za,” is held by the girl students of the Atsugi-Higashi High School to carry on the tradition.

<From the bottle gourd shelf over there…

Proclaiming these words, Takechi Mitsuhide is artfully made to dance. It is cute and stirring at the same time.
