Blast from the Past
One of the aims of the American Go Extra was to provide material to help upper kyū level players advance to the next stage. Every issue contained a feature entitled Power Up to Dan Strength! The Summer 1995 issue offered an article that explained a concept that all kyū players find intriguing but have trouble mastering: sabaki. A player uses sabaki to deal with a difficult position lightly, often scattering about sacrifice stones or making the opponent’s stones over-concentrated. The game used in this article was played between Takagawa Kaku and Sakata Eio in the Honinbō title match. It is a classic game that is very entertaining to play through.
